The Tappan Zee bridge is an impressive sight, sweeping across the Hudson River it links two suburbs of New York City, South Nyack and Tarrytown. But the venerable structure, whose name combines that of a local tribe, Tappan, and zee, the Dutch for sea, is under pressure. Around 134,000 cars a day make the crossing and as New York’s motorists will tell you, progress is painfully slow.
